I’ve been working on this series over 30 years, using this lush, highly contrasted image of Marlene Dietrich as the saloon singer ‘Frenchy’ from the classic western 'Destry Rides Again' (1939) as the basis. First as real life paintings/collages, then as digitally-produced physical works, now created specifically as a series for NFTs. This month I’ll be releasing the last 4 remaining works in this series, made in January-February 2021 but held back until now. Sugar High is inspired by pastel coloured, sweet images of vintage confectionery from my collections over the decades. So it includes a broad selection of bits and pieces from American, English, Australian and New Zealand products taken from packaging, advertising and cookbooks. Is it also a commentary on excess and how we poison ourselves with things we covet because we perceive them as good, when they’re not particularly? Yes it’s that as well.
