Samurai, as depicted in many Hollywood movies, were not blood-hungry ravagers. They were influenced by the teachings of Zen Buddhism as well as Confucianism. Samurai employed a range of weapons such as arrows and bows, guns and spears but their main weapon and symbol was the sword. The craftsmanship of swords, including carefully hammered blades, became an art in itself.
