Artist: Sabino Guisu @sabinoguisu
About the Artist:
"For some time, my work has been focused on reflecting on the power of symbols. I am inspired by the great tradition of Mesoamerican art, although I am also struck by various cultural contributions, from African and ancient art to modern countercultural movements. I think my work tries to reflect on the symbols that culture leaves in memory. But I am interested in taking a new look at all these symbolic forms; the frets, the crosses, the glyphs. I think we must look at them again to try to answer where we come from and where we are going. I try to resignify all these symbolic objects, sometimes creating large-format sculptures to which I add subtle electric lighting. I try to make a junction between the sacred and the profane and this I like to clarify in my work."
About the Art Piece:
“(COCIJO) This piece is a visual metaphor that symbolizes the joining of distant worlds. I believe in light and darkness as a synthesis of existence: from cave smoke to new technologies. I think that the ancestral and most contemporary processes have accompanied me in my creativity and if my work can have any transcendence or relevance in the contemporary world, I would say that it’s because it tries to unite worlds in perhaps divided or fragmented, apparently distant experiences of reality but that are actually not: the ancient and the contemporary, the sacred and profane, near and far. I try to build a new path by looking at the old path of humanity."
