Gorgonops (‘Gorgon eye’ or, ‘Gorgon face’) was a genus of saber-toothed mammal ancestors, around 2 m (6 ft 7 in) in length. It resided in what is now South Africa. It was an effective predator in its domain, with its large canines and less-gangly stature compared to its contemporaries allowing for faster, more efficient movement and greater hunting efficacy. It had a long head shaped like a triangle from above, with large canine teeth 12 cm (4.7 in) long and a thick jaw to support them.
