Digital Knots in R (1/22/2020, R code). This was the first generative artwork from Kenny Vaden. One hundred lines were computed, which started from random three-dimensional coordinates and performed random walks for five hundred time points. Lines were drawn from lowest to highest in the Z-dimension, with interposition, line widths, and color scaling to indicate their relative depths. There were no libraries, special functions, and no random number generator seed used for the original version, which is why this image has subtle differences from the original output. The image dimensions for this file are 20x20 inches and 300 DPI, which produced a file size below the 40 MB limit but provides a higher resolution (more detail) than the original version shown online.

These generative artworks were written in the R Statistics Language, my preferred coding language for research and statistics. Many of these were created in response to events that occurred during the global pandemic, as we watched exploding death rates, extreme apathy and resistance to helping others, and self-interested political leadership that only made matters worse. While the world offered us anxiety and dread, my creative interests turned from largely nature photography artwork to code-based artwork that created different output each time it was executed. I started to "meet" other code artists online who shared my excitement about this artform, with different art backgrounds and technical disciplines from myself that included designers, painters, engineers, biostatisticians. This was a rare chance to make friends and share what we had learned, during the apocalypse. We were fortunate. Daily practice developed my artistic style and themes that span across pieces.
