Familiar but deceiving (8/02/2021, R code). This code drew a line-series in thick black lines from bottom to top, which followed a switchback path with 40 rows. Over ten iterations, that path had a small amount of noise added, then was smoothed using spline interpolation. Each segment of the resultant line was colored using a slightly jittered color gradient. After each smooth and colored line was drawn, a subset of coordinates were used to guide the placement of random squares that were filled with position-dependent gradient colors and black edge lines. The image dimensions for this file are 16x20 inches and 300 DPI, which produced a file size below the 40 MB limit but provides a higher resolution (more detail) than the original 4x5 inch version that was shown online.
These generative artworks were written in the R Statistics Language, my preferred coding language for research and statistics. Many of these were created in response to events that occurred during the global pandemic, as we watched exploding death rates, extreme apathy and resistance to helping others, and self-interested political leadership that only made matters worse. While the world offered us anxiety and dread, my creative interests turned from largely nature photography artwork to code-based artwork that created different output each time it was executed. I started to "meet" other code artists online who shared my excitement about this artform, with different art backgrounds and technical disciplines from myself that included designers, painters, engineers, biostatisticians. This was a rare chance to make friends and share what we had learned, during the apocalypse. We were fortunate. Daily practice developed my artistic style and themes that span across pieces.
