With over 5.5 million inhabitants populating an area smaller than Rhode Island, real estate in Singapore is at a premium: 80% of the country's residents live in ubiquitous, "copy-pasted", high-rise public housing estates. Not surprisingly, these spaces aren't known for their design aesthetics or beauty, and seem a world apart from the popular, polished tourism staples like Orchard Road and Marina Bay.
Ordinary Spaces is a collection of 20 pieces by urban photographer Takashi Fujita, taken in and around Singapore's suburbia (2018–2021). In it, Takashi explores the unexpected and striking beauty of the ordinary, revealing captivating geometric forms commonly unseen.
Ultimately, his work challenges the audience to notice hidden beauty in their own everyday spaces.
