The Lonely Palm is a poignant image from photographer James Pitts. Captured on the remote Liuwa Plains, Zambia, in December 2021, this photograph represents so many feelings.
James had been exploring the plains for a couple of days; he had been trying to locate and photograph cheetahs, but this proved a fruitless task, mainly due to the extremely long grass. The Lonely Palm is one of the few landmarks on Liuwa Plains and had been a navigation reference point throughout the trip.
On the second evening, James started his return to camp with the distant thunderstorm building in the distance. As he approached the ominous landmark, he could see a great photograph taking shape. After a few practice photographs, three ducks came into view. They would land on the water in the foreground, but a touchdown for ducks can be a hit-and-miss affair. Luckily for James, the three ducks came in to frame at the correct altitude to brilliantly balance the tree in the photography.
There are many occasions when we look for guidance and support in our lives. The palm tree stands firm and lonely despite the turmoil of the thunderstorm echoing around. The setting of the sun and the passing wildlife come together to make a beautiful photo. Yet these simple elements also make a powerful metaphor for father figures we rely on throughout our lives. The beautiful sunset, the pastel colours, and the fleeting birds added to the strength and solitude of the tree offer a small insight into being a father.
