Shot on film (2018) In part this image was influenced by the films Les Diaboliques and Repulsion and is about a women who has escaped into an idyllic place which has been infiltrated by a sense of an enveloping supernatural darkness. It’s where dreams have merged with nightmares and considers the dark within, around and just within reach of us
Clares work, centred on self-portraits, is heavily influenced by the cinema, magical iconography, the counterculture of the 1960s and b-movies. Clare works with film to create and alternative and parallel world where she can co-exist with the ‘real’ world and is fascinated with the idea of ‘doubles’ and ‘doppelgangers’ and the concept of reinvention. Through a variety of female characters and scenarios her self portraits explore the hidden, unknown, feelings of loneliness, longing and an ambivalent sense of disconnection and connectedness.
