Nkan was confiscated from a woman traveling to Yaounde to offer him for sale, aged 2 weeks. When I photographed him he was still very small and clung onto his surrogate human mother and would cry if separated. He is now a powerful silver back weighting over 200kg.
James and Other Apes (#JAPES) presents 52 celebrated portraits of great apes, captured by James Mollison across four years and four continents. Shot in the aesthetic of the passport photograph, each Jape has their own unique traits and characteristics, and powerful stories which can be found at ART3.io/japes. 10% of net funds raised through NFT sales will be donated to the sanctuaries who rescued the apes and invited James in with his camera, and initial collectors will receive an archive quality certificated print with their Jape.
