JAPE story
Djeke was confiscated from a poacher attempting to sell to expatriates in Brazzaville. He was malnourished and had part of middle finger missing. He was nursed back to full health and has now been reintroduced into the wild and is the dominant male of a group of nine gorillas. When I photographed him I had to move in a very nonthreatening way (head down, shoulders hunched) as he was much more powerful than me and any perceived threat would have meant a severe beating. He is now a huge silver back and father of several offspring born in the wild.
