Chris: This picture is called "Mickey Mouse Mayor." I made it when Giuliani got elected...He had a lot of enemies, and they called him the Mickey Mouse Mayor. I thought it was appropriate at the time."

The five-story Andrews Hotel (originally the Montauk) was built in 1909 and today houses 183 men. It was purchased in the 1950s by the Gatto family (which, along with the Lyons Company, owned the bulk of the lodging houses on the Bowery at the time). It continues to be run by Mike Gatto. The Andrews offers the cheapest rooms on the strip--$4.50 a night--and is home to many of the surviving Bowery old-timers. The hotel has an eerie, frozen-in-time feel to it. Old men sit quietly in the lobby smoking cigars, reading the paper and playing solitaire.
