The Albatross:
One-of-one
It is based on the idiom from Samuel Coleridge’s famous poem “The Rime of The Ancient Mariner” in which a sailor is forced to wear an albatross’s carcass around his neck via a heavy rope. The albatross is used to represent the heavy burden someone carries, a burden that torments them incessantly. This is one of the most apt descriptions of depression I have encountered. This is a weight that is felt every morning you wake up and is the same heaviness that lays you down at night. People with depression carry an unseen albatross with them everywhere they go.
The Depths is a collection of 10 one-of-a-kind pieces, all hand-drawn, and painstakingly pried from the mind of someone suffering from depression. Each piece uses metaphor and personification to represent a specific part of depression and how it manifests itself in my life. A therapeutic process for me and one that I hope at the very least will allow the stigma behind mental illness to lower and for conversations to begin.
