This was my 5th visit to Key monastery. We hiked up till the viewpoint to create some sunset shots. The sunset was very normal as there wasn't much drama in the clouds. We were about the leave as it started getting windy, but Srivatsa(our group member) suggested us to meditate for a few minutes, the cold wind was blowing, light was pleasant, stars rising behind us, dream-catcher song playing on my phone and moon crescent waving us goodbye for the day and key monastery glowing in lights. The blue hour had begun and it stuck me an idea to create a shot of key monastery at blue hour with moon crescent which was never seen before.

We used our camera bags as makeshift tripod to create long exposures of the monastery, on wide angle lens and used a telephoto to shoot the moon separately. This was merged in post production to create the final output. This shot has been viral and been shared by many social media pages then and this gave me the much needed break from creative block.

Key Monastery from vantage point behind, in spring at blue hour after sunset, with moon crescent.

The Veil Of Eminence

This is a collection of 7 1/1 photographs of Key Monastery which is an 11th century Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in Himachal Pradesh, India photographed over the span of 7 years from 2016-2022, by Arun Hegden.

Reaching Spiti takes 36-48 hours through treacherous roads, and a strenuous climb of 30 minutes in the cold/ dusty winds through thin air, at an altitude of 12,000 ft which is really challenging.

As a person who lived majority of my life in the tropical land, I struggled everytime reaching here, having breathlessness, mild to heavy headache, bad stomach and acid reflux.. on almost all trips.

But the photographer in me kept pushing every time as I believe as great images are made out of your comfort zones. The challenge here was to create entirely different images of same place.

I have shot the monastery in different angles, different seasons, different lighting conditions, using different sky elements to achieve the same.
