I take this road often when driving to and from the city closest to me. Driving from the light towards the shadow is not something often seen. Mostly it is the opposite, people chase the light and for good reason. It is warm, embracing, and kind. What I think people forget is that one must face their personal darkness to be able to truly stand in the light. Happiness is earned, not given. Earned in the honesty of our words and actions and with how we live in the world we exist in. It is earned with how true we are to ourselves. Facing our darkness is often a silent journey we must take on our own, a long drive to a Muted Destination. There's never a guarantee that we'll get anything at our journey's end but we must try regardless, else we live a life of half-truths and half-loves.
Recalled Red is a series of works shot on 120mm rolls of Cinestill 800T film. The rolls were recalled due to the chemical imbalance that gives these images their warm overcast. This series is very personal to me. The red, orange, and yellow tones of the works, instead of representing their usual feelings of warmth and friendliness, explore the colder sentiments of isolation, the nostalgia of so-dreamt “better days”, and ambivalence towards life in the present and future that I’ve often struggled with. I hope that viewing this series presents you with a moment of respite and eases the passing of time for you as shooting it did for me.
