Frida Kahlo is a Mexican painter. She is very famous for her many self-protraits and her eccentric style. Though her art often portrayed herself or other subjects in an almost naive form, she used this means of expression to question the society in which she lived, drawing inspiration from pre-Columbian culture and the catholic religion.

She was part of the Mexican communist party where she met her husband Diego Rivera. The wedding wasn't a very happy one, Frida being bisexual and having many affairs, of which a brief one with Trotsky. (Diego did have many too, even with Frida's own sister) Her first solo exhibition was in New York in 1938. She later exhibited in Mexico and the United States, and through the 40's, also taught art.

Her health was rather mediocre, and started declining sharply around that time. She died in 1954 at the age of 47.

Her art was rediscovered in the 1970's following the publication of books about her. She is also a celebrated LGTBQ+ icon.
