Olga Mikh Fedorova’s unsettling piece depicts a dystopian forest with a drama enfolding. Fedorova’s work reflects the dangers and fears of our time and this Lynchian image is a surreal representation of censorship in digital space. A figure in the foreground dons a hoodie with Instagram’s notification for censoring posts plastered across their back with the phrase ‘Your Post Goes Against Our Community Guidelines’. Above the figure’s head a drone hovers, an ominous representation of the digital eye of surveillance. A semi-dressed woman cowers in the corner with her face in her hands hiding from the eye in the sky above her, but it appears that there is no escape. The title of the work ‘State Control’ has a double entendre – the digital world is in a state of control and simultaneously controlled by the state.
