I met Paul on the steps at Margate beach. His bike first caught my eye; it looked like something from Mad Max. In fact, so did he – were it not for the jarring polo shirt.

His eyes shone, reflecting the sea and the sky, part of the place, part of its future, part of its history... moving in all directions at once, each move cancelling the others out.

He said he usually hated having his picture taken, because the lens doesn't lie, people do. He said that seeing himself made him feel fallible... I knew what he meant.

This image comes from the project, Don't Push Me 'Cause I'm Close to the Edge, documenting happenstance encounters in and around the British coast. The project began in earnest during the COVID-19 pandemic, when travel was off limits.

This curated collection is capped at 100 pieces, released over time, at which point, it will be made into a photo book. This image is part of the first "drop" that includes images taken during the 2020–21 pandemic itself.
