Architecture is an integral element that forms the cultural and historical texture of a physical space and hence make up our cultural heritage. Ayasofya (Hagia Sophia), a more than 1500 year-old structure and a UN World Heritage Site, is one such monument.
I have always been impressed by its architecture, interiors, mosaics, tiles and its sheer historical aura, which reflect history and the blend of cultures and civilizations throughout centuries. This richness always captured my interest in photographing this place.
This is a photo of Ayasofya I took in December 2019 for a photography project on architecture of Istanbul and its inhabitants.
The light fills the interior through the windows, forming shadows and patterns on the floor. The centuries-old mosaics form a naturally grained texture. I used an angle that would best display the scale and depth of this long-standing monument while humans strengthen this effect and fill the frame with life.
Ayasofya has been serving as a mosque since 2020. Its interiors were re-organized accordingly, and the floor is now covered with carpets. This photo displays the harmony of light, reflections and shadows on the floors and the whole interior before the conversion.
