A method of painting that combines many layers of varying mediums to create a luminous, jewel-like glow. Egg tempera, a medium beloved by the old masters, is often combined with oil paint, resin, and sometimes, India ink, slowly building in semi-transparent to semi-opaque applications. This is often done on top of an Imprimatura or Grisaille.

This piece was created by employing Imprimatura, the first piece in this collection, as the base layer for a kind of digital velatura. Varying textures and opacities of digital paint, ink, and charcoal were applied by hand, along with textures formed collaboratively with Artificial Intelligence (Stable Diffusion and Artbreeder's "Collage"). Its process and aesthetic are intentionally similar to the artist's 2021 work, as they were beginning to find confidence in themselves through sharing their inner world with the art, AI, and NFT communities. The sketch lines are visible, and where color blooms, new sketch lines have appeared. It is the second layer in a journey that mirrors the artist's life.

About the Collection

Velatura is a method of indirect painting performed by applying numerous layers of semi-opaque to semi-translucent paint to a work of art in stages, letting each dry completely before adding another. As the layers all possess some level of transparency, light passes through the paint, hitting the canvas and reflecting back toward the viewer. This creates an otherworldly, glowing, living effect that is inimitable by any other means. The nature of the technique requires a tremendous amount of time--the more glazes, the more rich and beautiful the effect--and is very unforgiving of mistakes. The artist that dedicates to this slow, careful, path--to return, again and again, layer after layer, week after week--will bring a rare and singular beauty into the world.
