"Music is the arithmetic of sounds as optics is the geometry of light." - Claude Debussy
Essay: “geometry of light” might be one of the best definitions for photography. In the end, photographers use light to physically create a photo. The direction and strength of the light can significantly change a scene. For this shot, I camped in my window during covid lockdown and read the light throughout the day until I understood what the perfect timing would be.
This collection is an ode to my city Bilbao and an exploration of geometry within photography. Geometry has been linked to art from the beginning of history, whether it was in painting, sculpture, or music to name some examples. Kandinsky is one of the best examples that put all this together, creating paintings that were a visualization of music, colors, and geometric forms.
The name of the collection “Souls of Bilbao” makes reference to two aspects. First is to the individuals, wandering souls of the city, that cannot be recognized and become just another element of the composition. Second, and in the words of Plato, “through geometry one purifies the eye of the soul”. Geometry brings order, rhythm, music, and beauty to the eyes, and through that, our soul is elevated above the banalities of this world.
