Essay: geometry is widely used by human beings in so many ways, not only in art. We have the feeling of ownership but in reality, it is something that was given to us by the universe, a tool that we now use to create beauty in art. This photo was shot in the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, using one of the big windows and part of the building structure to create many different geometric forms that frame the almost imperceptible subject.
This collection is an ode to my city Bilbao and an exploration of geometry within photography. Geometry has been linked to art from the beginning of history, whether it was in painting, sculpture, or music to name some examples. Kandinsky is one of the best examples that put all this together, creating paintings that were a visualization of music, colors, and geometric forms.
The name of the collection “Souls of Bilbao” makes reference to two aspects. First is to the individuals, wandering souls of the city, that cannot be recognized and become just another element of the composition. Second, and in the words of Plato, “through geometry one purifies the eye of the soul”. Geometry brings order, rhythm, music, and beauty to the eyes, and through that, our soul is elevated above the banalities of this world.
