ARTWORK DETAILS:

Title: “Procession”

Story/Concept: A sizable floating piece of ice, probably more than one thousand years-old, is separated from the glacier it was part of, slowly initiating its travel towards the sea, through the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon in Iceland.

Along the way, its shape is constantly molded while it melts, part of a rhythmic procession with thousands of other ice pieces, leaving bystanders in awe with both the beauty and shock of this dance.

This is a place that was not supposed to be, so we pay witness with due respect. Each fraction of a second that is visually memorized in this location captures a unique array of transient sculptures, an extremely poignant reminder of both the impermanence of things and the need to act quickly and responsibly.

What is the “Freedom and Sovereignty” series?

This series is composed of images that were selected, curated and minted previously on the 1stDibs NFT platform. 1stDibs is an online premium marketplace for traditional art and luxury goods, which was also running a curated NFT platform for over one year. To the surprise of most of its NFT artists, the NFT platform got suddenly shut down, in my case soon after my drop. This was totally unexpected, especially when considering all the effort put by the curatorial team for my drop, with a feature on their home page.

But artists are used to obstacles and passion leads to perseverance, so this felt like the right moment to mint these images as Limited Editions through Manifold, liberating each one of them to the world, allowing them to breathe and circulate, expanding the reach of their message, establishing art self-sovereignty and freedom to transact, true pillars of the NFT and CryptoArt space.

TECHNIQUE/PROCESS:

-Single exposure photography, full frame camera, wide angle lens, tripod, manual focus

-Thick neoprene waders to endure the freezing cold water up to the thigh.

-Perseverance, dedication (and frustration) to be able to properly frame the constantly moving ice pieces to create immersive compositions under the best light conditions.

-Multiple visits to the same spot over 10 trips along 10 years since 2014. Each photo session lasting several hours. This image was captured in July 2021, during the Icelandic Midnight Sun
