チューリップ全般の花言葉は「博愛」「思いやり」。この花言葉がついたのはオランダのある伝説が由来とされています。

昔ある村に、とても心やさしく美しい女性がいました。その女性に恋をした3人の騎士は、それぞれの家宝である「王冠」「剣」「金塊」を女性にプレゼントし、愛を伝えました。しかし、心やさしい女性は1人を選ぶことができません。そこで、女性は女神フローラに会いに行き、「どうか私を花の姿に変えてください」とお願いしました。その願いを聞き入れた女神フローラは、女性をチューリップの花の姿に変えてあげたのです。こうして騎士たちは3人でそのチューリップの花を育てたのでした、という伝説です。
