Intense long distance storms smash the southern coastline of Western Australia each winter.
Some of the most powerful storm energy on the planet transforms the sea state into a terrifying but strangely beautiful chaos.
This ocean force soon finds its way towards one of the craziest surf spots on the planet. 'The Right' With the gigantic swell and onshore conditions predicted, it would be borderline out of control.
Upon enquiring with the dedicated group of wave hunters that love this place at its extreme - no one was interested. My assessment of the forecast revealed a possibility of conditions easing towards the end of the day. In this wild place, the weather can be extremely unpredictable.
I needed to see it with my own eyes.
This became a journey I was compelled to take alone in one of the wildest sea states I have ever experienced.
A journey that required every ounce of my ocean experience to ensure that I made it back to land.
Regardless of the safety plan in place I was completely reliant on myself out here.
In the Great Southern Ocean it takes only one tiny thing going wrong to create a life threatening catastrophe.
Any kind of rescue is hours away.
In the 30-40 foot seas created by this storm. I would have minutes and seconds - not hours left to survive.
This journey will forever be etched in my mind, one that challenged me as a person on so many intimate levels.
As I sat out there transfixed at the humongous pieces of water unloading ungodly amounts of energy to the granite slab below, the setting sun offered streaks of gold onto the wave face.
Watching the golden light intermittently break free of the storm front’s dark rolling cloud cover, I regained some trust in myself and my mission after a challenging start to the year.
