"Spirit walking" or "Shamanic Journeying" is a practice that dates back to prehistoric times. It is not connected with any religion but many cultures, past and present have incorporated spirit walking into their religious beliefs. It is described as an out-of-body experience where the individual enters a state of consciousness between sleep and dreaming on one hand, and wakeful consciousness on the other. In this state it is possible to make contact with helpful spirits who reside in the spirit world. In this simple artwork I tried to evoke this type of experience by juxtaposing a found photo of a native american shaman wearing a ceremonial mask, walking in a field (symbolizing external reality), with a purposeful application of bright coloured oil painting brushstorkes (symbolizing the spirit world) and digitally editing the whole picture so the colour hues gradually change.
