No.3 of 19 in my mouse painted, “vintage” series - created between late 1999 and mid 2002.

“Orbit”- painted at the end of 1999 - has history. It featured in The National Geographic’s book “Space Odyssey: Voyaging Through the Cosmos” (along with a future painting in this series). At the time it was seen as a worthy digital illustration in a mostly photographic, or traditional medium publication, which thrilled me! This piece has subsequently been used a few times on scientific programming on TV.

When I look back at this image, I can perceive the shift taking place in my approach. Attempting to be delicate with the composition, while also illustrating a large vista was quite different to the sort of art we made for games at the time.

I have a soft spot for this piece; I liked the concept so much that I made a “Redux” of it in 2010.
