Wild Water Buffalo, belongs to family Bovidae of order Aritodactyla. The global population of wild water buffalo is estimated to be less than 4000 individuals. A population decline of at least 50% over the last three generations (24–30 years) is projected to continue. The global population has been estimated at 3,400 individuals, of which 3,100 (91%) live in India, mostly in Assam. The wild water buffalo is the most probable ancestor of the domestic water buffalo. This species faces the problem of genetic degradation due to cross-breeding with domestic buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). Globally it is listed as Endangered in IUCN Red List category since 1986.
