I spent 5 days hiking around the absolute beast of a mountain known as Ausangate. The most memorable moment of the trek was on an evening when I was delirious from altitude sickness. I felt like giving up but knew I would never forgive myself if I did. Just when I felt like I couldn't go on any longer I heard a strange "merring" in the distance that sounded like a mix between a sheep and a dog toy. As I looked up, a herd of alpacas were bounding straight at me. I had seen thousands of alpacas grazing throughout the valleys while on this trek but never had I seen them sprinting full speed. I whipped out my camera as the herd was just about in front of me. As I clicked the shutter two of these funny, fluffy-headed, little creatures looked right into the lens as if they were posing for the photo. I would have thought it was a hallucination if not for this shot. This is my favourite photo I have ever taken and snapping it renewed my motivation to continue on and finish the trek to camp.
