‘L’ for ‘LAAK’

‘Laak’ means to speak in a language in Wolof, the unifying language spoken in Senegal and The Gambia. To me, becoming an artist has been a process of learning to speak, to ‘laak’, in the languages of form, colour, texture, and motion, in order to express meaning that is intangible and otherwise unspoken. I like to imagine that speaking artistically is a way to unlock the parts of myself that would be too difficult to unearth, question, accept. In many ways, the language of art is the safest entry point into my consciousness. Therefore when others engage with my art, they are in conversation with my deepest desires and fears. These conversations are an instrument of self-discovery, and ultimately, healing for me and those who resonate with it.
