Inversion.
The word inversion has many meanings. It has meaning in mathematics, music, linguistics, genetics, psychology and meteorology. In the mountains, inversion usually happens when the cold air at the bottom of the valley is trapped and unable to mix with the warm air coming over the ridges. This leads to a reversal of the normal “be careful, it’s cold up there” saying we often share between each other.
If you have the fortune of experiencing inversion at elevation you will literally think you’re in heaven. When you have the chance to experience inversion at elevation with a zoom lens, you’ll think God let you bring a carry-on item.
This image captures the peak of Rundle Mountain, one of the most iconic mountains in the Canadian Rockies. It was taken from over 5 miles away, across the valley on the edge of Snow Peak, at over 5,200 feet of elevation.
