An island that’s less than 33 million years old, a hotspot for geologic activity, formed by an upsurge of abnormally hot rock in the Earth´s mantle; ICELAND.
Situated deep in the highlands, this truly extraordinary geological sight was created from the central volcano, Hveravellir, and lies beneath a massive ice sheet to the east of Erikskökull. This geothermal field with numerous hot springs, fumaroles & hot mud has a very high silica ratio, so unique forms of geyserite accumulate around the hot springs.
I’d seen this area on maps and on google earth for years, and never had the means nor the know how to navigate intense dirt roads in the area, and truly thought this place wasn’t a location I would ever visit. Years later after dreaming about this specific location, we made the long trek on a recent visit to Iceland in 2021. Seeing the geothermal area from below was breathtaking yet even more phenomenal from an aerial perspective.
