Shiprock had been a place that I had really been wanting to visit since driving by it on our first trip to the desert southwest. This past April on our way to Utah we were finally able to stop here for a sunrise. When we pulled up first light was just creeping over the horizon it was a chilly peaceful morning in early April. Somehow we had this beautiful place to ourselves. The sun slowly started to rise above the horizon to give way to a beautiful sunrise that slowly lit up Shiprock. Shiprock is very sacred to the Navajo which makes this place even more amazing. What makes Shiprock so unique is its one the U.S best examples of a diatreme. Which is when a giant volcano erupted and the lava interacted with water to form a carrot shaped vent. The top layers eventually eroded over time and we are left with the rock we see today.
