Most times the aurora remains in a quite stable, faint arch above the northern horizon. When the geomagnetic activity picks up, the aurora can charge up and release in the form of incredibly bright, colorful and fast-moving curtains. When that happens, it's always better to have your camera in portrait mode at a fast shutter speed to freeze the moment, as this is when you can capture the craziest aurora shapes!
