Shan shui (山水) is a traditional Chinese painting form that translates to “mountain water.” These landscape paintings center mystical mountain ranges understood to be immortal lands. As an Asian American, this style of painting fosters the ancestral spirit of home.

I used machine learning to train a generative model to paint shan shui. The model’s obfuscation mimics the strong fog of imperfect memory.
