Would you believe me if I told you that more than 80% of the ocean is undiscovered? Who knows what other-worldly creatures or sentient beings may be out there?

Growing up surfing and swimming in Fiji, the thought of mermaids roamed my imagination. They haunted my peripheral vision when out on the water in the early mornings and late afternoons. When visibility lowered it became harder to make out what was a wave or something else entirely. Was it just the last of the days light reflecting on the surface playing a trick on my mind?

I capture this shot some 20 years later while shooting at a West Coast Beach in New Zealand. Dusk setting in and visibility diminishing making it harder to distinguish between waves and whitewash, this is when mermaids pop into vision. Is this real, or am I dreaming? It doesn’t matter at this point as I point my camera towards the horizon, the lens directed at the last of the days light, and shoot.
