The Large Magellanic Cloud is an irregular satellite galaxy to our own Milkyway. It is visible only in the southern hemisphere close to the south celestial pole. It is easily visible at night to the naked eye and appears as a faint cloud in the night sky separated from the Milkyway.
It is about 157,000 light years away and has a diameter of about 14,000 light years. It is about 1/10 as massive as our own Milkyway. It is full of interesting objects, notably the huge Tarantula Nebula which if it was as close to Earth as the great Orion Nebula it would cast shadows at night.
29 Hours of data was acquired via Telescope live using a remote telescope in Australia. All image processing by Ronan Hunt.
A physical print will be made for the first collector should they wish it.
