As we made this hike, I couldn't help but feel the pain of the land, knowing that only a couple of hundred years before me, the land was robbed of its native trees, the mighty Kauri, some trees over 2000 years old. This is the harbour the were shipped far and wide around the globe, leaving none left in it's path locally. Only 0.5% of the original Kauri remain.

These trees, take hundreds of years to grow to a mature state, and thousands of years to fully grow to their potential. Not content with the trees, they also dug the land up to remove the gum, which was used for varnish, and all other kinds of daily items.

Taking a breath after reaching the top of the left hand peak you can see, I couldn't help but feel the land, and try to view it as it lay in the past. To my people, the connection with these giants goes far beyond just a tree, they are our ancestors.
