Los Angeles has a bad habit. The sprawling basin pulsing with cars, trucks, trains and planes, builds up a layer of pollution and smog. On hot summer days, when no wind is blowing it collects as a thick haze that hangs over the city. Much like the cigarette smoke of a classic noir detective, the smog creates an aura of mystery and danger that gives Los Angeles its dystopian side.

World Capital of Imaginary Places is an ongoing series that explores how the unique geographical and meteorological properties of Los Angeles have influenced the visual language of cinema, and subsequently how the city has imprinted itself into the collective subconscious of culture and the language of contemporary media.
