“Chicago in Motion” is a stop-motion piece I made during a short visit to the windy city in November of 2021. The gif portrays an L line train as it makes its way across the famous “S curve.”

The majority of my images are “impressions” of spaces - they are essentially just visual representations of what one may feel when witnessing time passing in these places. My goal is usually a single static image of each scene, but in this case, I felt as though motion was needed to truly represent all the changes I was seeing.

This boomerang captures the change in lighting due to moving clouds, a train coming around the bend, and the motion of traffic on the street below. I don’t think the still image I made here could have showcased all of these changes.

This image is the first of many that will contribute to a larger project: a series of moving images that document the paths of movement that objects take in city scenes.
