Vertigo is a 3D animation created by digital artist Andrew Finley. I started this project at the beginning of quarantine in 2020 as an outlet for all my anxiety, fear, and stress from that period of time. I wanted to challenge myself to see if I could create a piece individually, that rivaled the visuals of some of the biggest budget Sci-Fi films. Created over the course of approximately 5 months, this project represents hundreds of hours of work - laboring over the 3D modeling, shading, lighting, animation, cinematography, motion capture, and simulation.
This piece is a love letter to the space opera genre, and is largely inspired by the idea of the 'Special World' from Joseph Campbell's archetype of the hero's journey. The conceit of this piece was that this would feel like a scene cut straight from a blockbuster film introducing the world of 'Vertigo Station' for the first time.
Sound design by Kai Paquin.
Created primarily using the 3D software Houdini/Redshift.
