Original 1/1: Spirit Series: Curated Lines Size: 8422 x 8422 jpeg
A new Abstraction series.
The Japanese Aesthetic of Yūgen is at front and centre of my process for Abstracts. The exact translation of this beautiful word depends on the context in which is it used. In artistic terms Yūgen is about the viewer participating in the painting from an imaginary perspective. To see layers and depth, and imagine what lies beneath.
Chōmei described it as “When looking at autumn mountains through mist, the view may be indistinct yet have great depth. Although few autumn leaves may be visible through the mist, the view is alluring. The limitless vista created in imagination far surpassing anything one can see more clearly”
Negative space, shapes with depth, beautiful imperfection, irregularity and asymmetry are ways I seek to encourage the viewer to exercise their imagination, and immerse in the layers.
In the digital world, I use Illustrator, Corel and Photoshop.
