Kīlauea Volcano, Hawai‘i August 2016
I stood on the newly hardened crust, my feet hot from the molten lava beneath. Pahoehoe lava breakouts flowed within a few feet of me and every few minutes I backed up as they advanced toward the ocean and me.
This photograph was taken during the “blue hour,” just after sunset when the sky turned a deep blue and the lava lit up the landscape.
A portion of proceeds will be donated to the Polynesian Voyaging Society.
