I woke up to find the Storm Prediction Center had taken the risk for tornadoes away. A low risk day is always worth it during May since it is peak storm season in the Great Plains of the USA. Storms in the north kept teasing us, but a tornado never formed. It was close several times but to no success. As I watched the southern storm strengthen on radar, I chose to bail the northern storm and move south. I watched the storm split and the usual split that goes on to do things died right in front of me. Very mad, I sat for a minute watching the north storm churn away. In an unlikely series of events, the left split (the split that usually goes off to fizzle) ramped up and kept going strong. With a perfect road system, I decided to get as close as I could because why not. A few funnels popped out and I knew this storm was going to drop a tornado soon. A "Why Not" decision to reposition on the backside of the storm turned out to be a great idea. With cool winds dropping from the storm (RFD) rather than warm air coming from the ground (inflow) the chance of an unobscured view of a tornado was all for me and a fellow chaser Hunter Fowkes. Surges of RFD were visible due to the dirt being kicked up in front of us and those meant we were in for a treat. Many dropped and a tornado formed less than a quarter mile away from us. A 0% day reaped a great reward and I was in the perfect spot to view it. It lasted a few minutes and crossed through the field next to us. The outer circulation was within feet of us as it passed. Between video clips we would jump and cheer for having such a great intercept. This was one of those "My Reason Why" days!

Born to Chase. What I told myself last year when I stood face to face with the reality my dream of being a storm chaser came true. What I told myself this year when I set out to chase the plains and Arizona. Something was missing in my life and it was the fear and adrenaline rush from being next to the most dangerous and beautiful thing: storms.
