Say her name, a phrase we use to remind society that a person has been killed by violence, that a woman has once again been subjected to violence. This piece is about shining light on the abuse that women face at home, during war or on the streets. As a social worker I had to stand by women who were tortured and raped during war crimes. I worked with women who were facing domestic abuse and could not find a way to escape. How do we make a difference? How do we change things? The first step is to recognize and accept how big a problem this is and how deep it runs, world wide. There are organisations with boots on the ground trying to help women affected, instead of taking their funding away we need to make sure these organisations can be accessed and used.
