Purple Rain is the sixth studio album by American recording artist Prince, released on June 25, 1984. Purple Rain further established Prince as a figurehead for pop music of the 1980s and is regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time.
Prince (June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016) was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, actor, and director. He was known for his flamboyant and androgynous persona, eclectic work, and wide vocal range.
In the midst of a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol. Hollow circle above downward arrow crossed with a curlicued horn-shaped symbol and then a short bar (known to fans as the "Love Symbol"), and was sometimes referred to as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince or TAFKAP, or simply the Artist.
