Punkin grew up on a kale farm in Connecticut. When Punkin was small she fell in love with autumn - the colorful leaves dropping to the ground, crunching underfoot as she hiked through the valley. The smell of woodsmoke wafting out of chimneys. The way moonbeams remained suspended in humidity which left everything around her just slightly out of focus. And of course, pumpkin bread with raisins and walnuts -- only available during her favorite season. Though their hard-earned income came from selling kale, Punkin convinced her parents to let her grow a small patch of pumpkins on a forgotten corner of the farm. Punkin worked hard and spent hours in the field singing to her pumpkins, encouraging them to grow. And grow they did. Punkin perfected the art of growing giant, perfectly round Connecticut field pumpkins, ultimately winning the prize for largest pumpkin at the Topsfield Fair in 1897 (which she then turned into a giant pumpkin bread, of course).
