this piece is my new beginning. it's representative of the year 2022 for me, as i spent the beginning months of the year deep in the soil, i felt like a carcass that had been tossed on the side of the road and left to rot. slowly, i began to reassume human form and even grow wings so that i could transcend the barriers of earth and fly -- but figuratively.
here's a short poem i wrote while making the piece:
feeling like i need to press myself against the soil and let gravity pull me under so i can bury myself in it
beneath the earth’s surface
seems like the only way i’d get some peace and quiet.
deep inside i lay,
arms crossed,
legs bent up to my chest,
this position is my chrysalis.
warm,
safe,
and transformative
i hold myself tightly
patient,
and waiting
for the earth to finally propel me upwards.
i must assume a new form
i don’t want to sink deeper into the soil
and become as desolate as my surroundings
i shall prevail
to blossom, or to decompose
