It is a "story-play" style of art but it is distinguished by elaborately colorful make-up, costumes, and face masks traditionally worn by male actor-dancers. The fully developed style of Kathakali originated around the 17th century and has its roots in temple and folk arts. A Kathakali performance, like all classical dance forms of India, synthesizes music, choreography, and hand and facial gestures together to express ideas. Kathakali differs in that it also incorporates movements from the ancient Indian martial arts and athletic traditions of South India.
