Captured over the course of 3 days, the "Ephemeral Cycle" documents the state of flux and deterioration of a massive land-art mural created on snow/ice located near a remote islet off the coast of Southern Finland. The days are represented in Latin "DIES" which take on a dual meaning to represent the short lived nature of our time here on earth.

Day 1- Artist David Popa ventures to the farthest edge of the frozen ocean where the ice meets the water and uncovers this brilliant islet with fragments of ice still clinging to its rocks. Due to the nature of working with only charcoal, earth and water on ice and snow, the piece must be completed in a very brief time or risk fading away. The somber male portrait comes to life just before sunset where the completed image is taken.

Day 2- The artist returns to witness the work significantly faded away as the charcoal and earth have sunk deeper into the layers of the snow along with being covered by flurries of snow the night prior.

Day 3- A warm day melts a significant amount of snow away to reveal an almost morbid portrayal of the portrait in the landscape. It appears as if only a corpse remains and waits to fully return back to the earth.

The following days new fresh snow covered the landscape and now spring has all but removed the memory of the work... The ephemeral cycle of life.

“FRACTURED" IS A PROJECT LOCATED ON VARIOUS ICE FLOATS IN SOUTHERN FINLAND. BY USE OF ONLY EARTH, CHARCOAL AND THE SOURCE WATER, A SERIES OF PORTRAITS WERE CREATED ON FRACTURED ICE FLOATS THAT REMAINED FOR ONLY A BRIEF TIME. THE PIECES WERE DOCUMENTED VIA AERIAL DRONE VIDEO, PHOTOGRAPHY AND PHOTOGRAMMETRY THAT NOW EXIST AS 1/1 NFT’S. THE PROJECT EVOLVED AS A RESPONSE TO THE ONGOING CONFLICT IN UKRAINE, WHICH HAS ONLY FURTHER HIGHLIGHTED THE FRACTURED STATE OF THE WORLD UNTO WHICH WE LIVE. DURING THE PROJECT, THE ICE FRACTURED COMPLETELY UNEXPECTEDLY AT UNPREDICTABLE TIMES, LEAVING THE ARTIST AT ODDS WHETHER CONTINUING THE WORK WAS EVEN WORTHWHILE. FROM THE GROUND, ONE WOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO DECIPHER ANY SILVER LINING WITHIN THE CHAOS, HOWEVER FROM ABOVE, THE FRAGMENTS HOLD A HARMONY AND BEAUTY THAT IS IMPERCEPTIBLE FROM ANY OTHER PERSPECTIVE. THE WORK OFFERS A MEANS TO POINT THE VIEWER NOT TO DESPAIR AND CHAOS, BUT RATHER QUESTIONS WHERE WE MUST LOOK TO MEND THE BROKEN FRAGMENTS OF OUR LIVED REALITY AND PERHAPS HOW THE FRAGMENTS CAN BE USED TO CREATE AN ENTIRELY NEW MOSAIC FROM THE SCATTERED VESTIGES.
